In 2006 I completed my residency at Headington School in Oxford, where as well as teaching I continued my own research into the problem of seeing and believing, and the mechanics of representation.

Towards the end of the year my attention turned towards the process of appearance, in particular making use of the invisible qualities of a place and atmosphere. I began work on my Jerwood Sculpture Prize proposal, and moved to London.

The following pages include a selection of work made during this time.

Small Imaginary
silverpoint and gouache on cartridge

The Small Imaginaries series works within a similar premise to the Imaginary Feminine series, although here the surface ground played a greater part in the process of their making. Using a small area of white gouache (invisible in this photograph) on paper, the drawings were made in silver. This process served to both suggest and limit the image of the figure drawn, as silverpoint makes a visible mark only against the gouache.
